Ratbite made a disgusted sound in her throat, and then turned and walked away, leaving Flametail behind. "MireClan!" She called. "It's time to leave! We have won this battle." At this point she turned and glared pointedly at Winterfrost. "Let's go!"
She trotted away, holding her tail high in the air. The MireClan patrol followed her, with many snarls and flexing of claws. There would clearly be another battle over the territory, but it would not be today. MireClan had won, for the time being, and GaleClan was obliged to go home and rest for a few moons, building up their strength.
-- -- -- --
As the cat he had been fighting broke away and ran off, Aquafrost noticed the new patrol of GaleClan cats for the first time. They all seemed to have shocked looks on their faces. Concerned, he followed the direction of their gazes, and saw... Flametail. Oh no.
He hadn't known her well; he hadn't joined GaleClan too long ago, but even he knew that losing their deputy was a serious thing, especially when they didn't have a leader to appoint a new deputy.
Now who was going to be leader?

Rainfall stared in shock at the body of his leader. His eyes seemed to glaze over in shock. Flametail.... Dead. Just last night she had been full of life on the patrol they were on together. But now she was gone. Killed by those... those... Rainfall couldn't think of a bad enough for the other cats. As he watched Ratbite's triumphant smile, the grief turned to rage. Did she think it was a good thing that a brave, loyal cat was dead? His fur bristled and he snarled at the other clan "Winterfrost's right, we'll be back" Spitting, he added "We won't forget this." before turning and leaving. He couldn't bear to stay at the site of this brutal attack. He let his rage carry him back to camp, the sound of the wind rushing through his fur seemed to dull the pain of the clan's loss, of my loss? he thought silently. Soon, all his thoughts melted away as the only thoughts in his head were of the earth under his paws, and the rush of air that blew past him. He was telling the truth, he would never forget this. We'll get them back for this. They'll be sorry. maybe not now, maybe not next moon, maybe not in a dozen seasons, but someday we'll be strong enough again." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hearing Ratbite's words, Gullshadow pulled out of the Blue cat's grasp as he let go. Bounding over to her clanmates, she felt like yowling their victory to the whole forest. As she reached the rest of her clan, she noticed the GaleClan leader at Ratbite's feet. An unsettling feeling seemed to reach her stomach. She was dead. She knew it was her enemy, she should feel happy about it. She knew she loved the feeling when she managed to make a large gash on an enemy's side, or give them a scar they wouldn't forget, but death was so... Final. She shook her head, exhausted from the battle, and followed her clan home.

Fury. Blinded by it, eaten. Grief. Washed by sadness. They both weighed down on her shoulders like a heavy stone, unable to escape her. No. Who will be leader of GaleClan now? And how could Flametail be dead? Did StarClan have no pity toward her Clan? Did they want to kill every last warrior? Whoever will be the new leader, they'll need to go meet StarClan quickly and receive their new name and nine lives. We can't keep our guard down. Now that we are leaderless, MireClan will most likely attack once more. Her claws sunk into the grass, ripping some blades from the ground. She saw that MireClan was already parting, and leaving their new territory. She heard her sister's words ring loud and clear, and for a second she thought that Flametail had spoke those true, brave words, but then Summerfeather remembered. Flametail was dead. The word still rung in her mind, and she pictured herself blood-stained and motionless. You took two leaders from us... Why? What have we done wrong? Is there some sort of curse hanging over us like Silverpelt? she thought, then shivered, wondering if her Clanmates were thinking about the same thing that she was. A new thought slapped into her mind like eagles talon's, Will Aquafrost be leader? Her gaze rested on the tom-cat. Powerful shoulders made her heart beat faster, and even when he was half-dead he looked dangerous. Rainfall, a thin, dark grey tom deserved to be leader as well. His heart was true to GaleClan. Then her gaze turned to Winterfrost, making her shiver once more, paws tingling. She had a glasslike look in her icy blue orbs, making her honey colored ears flatten to her skull, wondering what happened to her sister- or what she had saw. Did she receive a sign from StarClan? For a heartbeat she longed to ask her this, but then she remembered that the warriors were all around her, and kept silent. She felt paws making their way toward her, and saw Rainfall bound past her, wind flying in her face as he raced. Ruffled and frightened, she took one last look at her white sister, confusion in her amber gaze.
But she hadn't moved. It seemed like she was losing a life standing, but she was just a warrior. Spinning to her paws, she took another look over her shoulder, not sure if she should leave Winterfrost behind. When they were apprentices, they always made sure that one was alive after battles. Shaking, she turned around slowly to her sister, and padded next to her, sitting down and wrapping her tail around her dipped paws. Blinking slowly, Summerfeather turned her amber colored head to her right, then meowed softly, "It's okay..." She knew that it wasn't, but she went on away, words quivering slightly, "H-Have you had a sign... From StarClan? I dreamed a-about MireClan invading our t-territory..." She didn't know if that meant anything, but she decided to add it in. Scooting closer, and murmured, "Do you know who the new leader will be?" Without waiting for an answer, Summerfeather spun around, leaping to her small feet, and then bolted forward, paws skimming on the ground. The only thought while she was running was: Who will lead GaleClan?

Duststar stood at the battle scene a moment and looked down at Flametail's body. Then he turned and ran off to the front of his clan where Ratbite was leading them. He had come only to gain more territory, not to kill. But Ratbite always did seem to come to her own decisions. He walked beside her for a moment, thinking. Then, when they were out of earshot of the GaleClan cats he turned to her. "What are you thinking?" he hissed. "That was completely unnecessary."

"No, it wasn't unnecessary," the MireClan deputy hissed quietly to her leader, looking around to make sure no one else was listening. Seeing their leader and deputy argue would be very bad for MireClan's morale. "You know GaleClan... they would never have given up. And we needed the territory. Of all the clans, MireClan has the least territory, and, even when the plan was here, we still tied in last place for territory with ThornClan. We can never grow strong like that."

Duststar sighed. He didn't like the idea of killing another cat, but Ratbite had a point. GaleClan didn't give up easy. And MireClan needed territory. Then he turned to her. "We still could have won without killing Flametail. It just would have taken a little longer." he said quietly.

The MireClan deputy laid her ears down flat against her head. "Maybe we would have, maybe we would not have won." She sped up and raced towards camp, clearly dropping the conversation. She had done what she thought was best, and wasn't interested in discussing it any further. "I'll be in the medicine cat's den," she called over her shoulder as she ran.

Winterfrost... The silence seemed to last moons instead of only a small paw-full of meager heartbeats. Winterfrost stood still after she had finished speaking. Words, as well as actions, failed her. Her limbs felt like they were frozen to the ground, and her heart felt like it was about to burst out of her chest from its rapid fluttering. Never before had she felt this way. Never before, in the many moons that she had lived, had she felt like the world was spinning around her. She'd never realized before how cruel life could be. But it was the way of the Clans and GaleClan was Winterfrost's life. Maybe StarClan had taken Flametail for a reason.... But whatever that reason was, the answer failed her like own words. She could fathom why her ancestors would have decided to take another leader of GaleClan and not even one who had revived nine lives. Surely that wasn't a very decent way of showing respect to the living. Surely they had some other reason. But the white she-cat just couldn't understand why StarClan had taken Flametail away from GaleClan, especially when she would have make an excellent leader. And now GaleClan was leaderless once more. Again, Winterfrost wondered who would fall into that path. Rainfall maybe. Aquafrost had only just joined, so it wasn't very likely to be him, although he had shown brilliance and bravery during the battle. Summerfeather didn't seem like the right cat either, though she loved her sister. The playfulness that was Summerfeather's personality just didn't seem like leader quality. Nor did Summerfeather always make the right decisions. Her sister was always quick to decide and quick to act, and once she'd make up her mind, not even a bolt of lightning could change it. Still Summerfeather had patience... and that was a quality that should be present when looking for leaders. But a part of her was beginning to think that her thoughts were drifting in the wrong direction. Because what... what if it was her?
Winterfrost shook the thought out of her head. No, there were far better warriors, who were much more experienced, to be leader. Although Winterfrost was still one of those experienced warriors; she still didn’t think she’d qualify for being leader. Or maybe that was just because the idea seemed too ridiculous to her. She didn’t want the job desperately because she wasn’t a power-hunger, ambitious cat, but that didn’t meant that if she was given it she’d refuse. Actually, Summerfeather had always told her that she would make a good leader and Winterfrost was sure her sister was right. But just the fact that GaleClan had lost Flametail, that they were now leaderless again, struck her as a very powerful blow. Legs slightly trembling, Winterfrost swayed where she stood for a few moments, before she regained her composure and blind her blue-white eyes. She felt a rush as Rainfall raced to camp, heard her sister’s whisper, and then felt her leave too. That left only her and Aquafrost then. A sigh escaped past her jaws and her shoulders sagged. Her gaze still locked on Flametail’s motionless body, the she-cat murmured to Aquafrost, “And a battle bring another death. It seems that StarClan chooses even the best and strongest warriors to join them, when they feel their time is ready.” She closed her eyes, hoping to see Flametail’s body disappear and her deputy revived from the dead. Without opening them, she said in a louder voice to Aquafrost, “Seeing as how you’re the only other warrior left here, would you help me carry Flametail’s body into camp, so our former young leader can have a proper vigil?” Winterfrost padded forward to her former leader’s motionless body, head dipped low to the ground as she walked. GaleClan had lost territory and a deputy in one night. So much was lost…. But at least Flametail would be sitting with her ancestors in the stars tonight. [/color] //OOC: Horrible post. D: //
